PMI Women's Community

PMI Japan Chapter Women's Community Regular Meeting No. 18 Report

The 18th regular meeting, the last of 2023, was lively with themes that made us think about our careers, then, we each chose our own "Kanji of the Year" to summarize this year.

One of the themes was "Do you feel the glass ceiling? What is a glass ceiling? "

The term glass ceiling refers to persons with sufficient qualities and accomplishments to deserve promotion within an organization, however, they are unfairly denied promotion because of their gender, race, or other factors.

After explaining the material “Does the glass ceiling still exist?",

we asked the participants, "Do you feel that it does?"

Some said, "members of large meetings outside the company or inside the company are all men", "There are not many women in positions" and others said, "It seems too hard, so I don't want to be a candidate for promotion”. In addition, there was a case in which a woman was removed from the list of candidates for promotion because she seemed to be having a hard time for raising kids.

There are women who choose to transfer or retire because of life stage changes, and women who say they are not suited for management positions.

Some commented, "I think the problem is their past careers that have led them to believe that.”

Rather than breaking through such a "glass ceiling," we are slowly pushing it up. Isn't it also important to take advantage of the quota system to increase the ratio of women in the workforce and to create a better environment? We discussed the matter a lot.

The next theme was the importance of creating an environment in which women can work. We talked how to deal with such an environment in a positive manner.

The discussion moved on to the introduction of respected people and role models.

Role models, both male and female, were introduced as people who have inspired them to change the way they work, and they live challenging lives even as they get older.

Finally, in keeping with the current trend, we each chose a "Kanji of the Year" for the year. The kanji chosen by everyone were "new," "next," "challenge," "illness," "heavy," "step," "pair," "move," "separation," and "departure". The variety of kanji brought out the faces of the members of the community.

Some mentioned thier encounter with PMI Women's Community as their topic of the year! We closed the last regular meeting of the year with renewed determination to make next year even better.

Thank you to everyone who attended.
